iPhone Hacks

Here you’ll find every useful iPhone hack that is known. Every iPhone hack will be explained, and the ones that aren’t way too complicated will be taught. The articles in this category will show you nifty ways to make your iPhone run better, even if Apple doesn’t want you to know about them.

Geohot Gives Up On Jailbreaking iPhone 3.1.3

PastedGraphic-17

Our favorite hacker Geohot delivered some pretty earth shattering news earlier this morning. According to his tweet, it is pretty much impossible to jailbreak the latest iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch models that are running on OS 3.1.3 (damn you Apple). We don't know what to make out of this apocalyptic announcement yet, as we are still optimistic that someone, somewhere may just find a workaround. For instance, RedSn0w  has already become a savior of sorts as the Dev Team has  managed to jailbreak the older devices running on 3.1.3 by using RedSn0w 0.9 which you can read about here.

FrankenPhones: Hacker Merges Bose Headset, Apple Inline Remote

Ibose-20100105

In what can only be described as a "best of both worlds" hack, Freddy Deeble took a Bose headphone and modified it with an Apple inline controller.  Want your own "iBose" cans?  Grab a soldering iron and follow the bouncing video tutorial:

Video Demo: iPhone With Magic Mouse And Virtual Keyboard

This is actually several kinds of neat: a Magic Mouse accessing an iPhone, via Bluetooth, courtesy of the BTStack project.  (No, we didn't know what BTStack was, either; according to the project's home page, it "provides a portable Bluetooth Stack [and supports] devices for which the OS either does not provide a Bluetooth Stack or the available stack is severely limited [e.g., on the iPhone].")

But it's not just the Mouse that's intriguing in this demo.  Notice the red glowing thingie on the desktop?  That's a Celluon CL800BT virtual keyboard, which can project onto any flat surface and respond to your touch.

While you may question the actual, y'know, need for mouse support on your iPhone, the BTStack functionality alone is going to open up lots of connectivity possibilities.  (Plus, if you've ever struggled with an old Palm Pilot/expansion keyboard combo, just the idea of a virtual keyboard like the Celluon is way cool.)  And if you've got a jailbroken iPhone, you can already link to a Bluetooth keyboard -- here's how.

Jailbreaking For New iPhone and iPod Touch Owners

Screen shot 2009-12-30 at 7.15.01 PM

Most iPhone and iPod Touch users are often faced with the gut-wrenching dilemma; to jailbreak or not to jailbreak? If you are also contemplating jailbreaking but still afraid to take the plunge then maybe you should first check out all the reasons to jailbreak. If you still need further convincing then going through our  jailbreak and unlock categories at  http://www.ismashphone.com/iphone and http://www.ismashphone.com/unlock-iphone/ respectively seems like a good idea.

Those who have decided to jailbreak can either try the blacksn0w way or use the more popular Pwnage tool method (recommended).  Keep in mind guides above cover iphone unlocking as well as jailbreaking.

In case you change your mind or something goes terribly wrong don't panic as you can  recover your iPhone or iPod Touch by just following this guide.

You may also need links to iPhone OS downloads and other iPhone jailbreak related files which you can read about here.

For iPod Touch owners read this (taken from Dev Team blog):

iPod Touch 1G (Original iPod Touch)

Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes.

iPod Touch 2G

Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes, this will only work if you are already Pwned at 3.0 or 3.1. If you are at 3.1, downgrade to 3.0 and use redsn0w to Pwn 3.0 then you have an upgrade path using PwnageTool.

iPod Touch 3G

At this time PwnageTool does not support this device.

Note: Most likely if you got iPod Touch as a present for Christmas it is 3G version therefore you cannot jailbreak it.
