Got Four Disposable Drinking Cups and Two Toothpicks? You Have an iPod Speaker System!

How about this for a very low-tech solution when you need a set of speakers for your iPod!! This "CupSpeakers" build by designer Dmitry Zagga is about as low-tech as you can get, but it works great.

Just punch a little hole in the bottom of each of two disposable drinking cups, insert your iPod's ear buds, then attach the "speakers" to two more upside down drinking cups with the toothpicks. Voila! Speakers. (OK, OK, it may not compete with real speakers, but when you're desperate…)

You may not be able to get a good 5 cent cigar anymore, but who says you can't have a serviceable 5 cent speaker system?

[via Yanko]

Those clever lads who gave us TouchType (the landscape-mode email program) may have outdone themselves...

With SMS Touch, you type out a message and send it as a regular email to anyone in your phonebook. Here's the clever part: they receive it (and can respond to it) as a normal SMS message, BUT their response comes back to you as another email. Considering that AT&T wants an extra US$15/month for unlimited texting -- and SMS Touch only costs five bucks (most of which goes to ongoing backend support) -- the savings are obvious. And if they're not obvious, the following video should correct that:

The iPhone Dev Team has done it again...

Team member planetbeing, thanks to some clever reverse-engineering, has figured out how to run Linux on an iPhone, controlled with a USB keyboard running off the iPhone multi-purpose port.

While the current implications of this hack are at best academic, one projected outcome is Google's Android running directly on an iPhone.

Here's a more detailed video of the hack:

Keep in mind that while the Linux port has the framebuffer driver (for video), the serial
driver, serial over USB driver, and drivers for the interrupts, the
clock, and miscellaneous hardware components, it's still missing most of
the other things, like write support for the NAND memory, wireless
networking, touchscreen drivers, sound, accelerometer, and, one big and, the baseband chip, which is what makes the iPhone communicate with the cellular networks.

[Via Gizmodo]
