What It Is

If you're an avid Mac user then you've gotta be familiar with 1Password.  It's very popular in the Mac community for its ease of use and high quality.  1Password for Mac has won multiple awards from various magazines and tech sites, so it's great to finally have an iPhone version.

  • Stores private information on your iPhone
  • Use 1Password to log in to various accounts without having to remember usernames and passwords
  • Features:
    • 2 layer defense - unlock code and master password
    • Secure two way sync with Mac computer (need to have 1Password for Mac, sold separately)
    • Data encryption
    • Auto website login

Update 1.1 will fix the issue of the app not auto-locking when iPhone goes into sleep mode while 1Password is still running.

The Good

  • A simple way to save your private data and passwords on your iPhone
  • Allows you to sync your wallet (credit cards/drivers license/etc) , web forms (usernames/passwords), and notes (any text) with your Mac (additional software required)
  • Syncing is easy to configure
  • You can edit notes on your iPhone and then sync it back to your computer

____________________________________________________________________________

The Bad

  • Logins only works with 1Password, so it's not integrated with your iPhone's Safari (SDK limitation)
  • After syncing Wallet info first time, the Wallet button will show only after restarting the app
  • Cannot edit Wallet items
  • Cannot add new Wallet items
  • There is not robust system to manage syncing conflicts, it just creates copy of the conflicted items so you have to manage it yourself later on
  • When you're entering logins you need to know the web form parameters if you want the username/password entering done automatically
  • Can only sync to Mac

The Verdict

The developer of 1Password made the right decision by issuing this app for free. They have a limited ability to beta test their app so this is great news for early adaptors. However, the only people that will find this app useful are current owners of the 1Password app for Mac, for the power of this application is it's ability to sync with your computer.

That being said, if you have the software on your Mac - we recommend it.

If not, then 1Password isn't for you.
